BLOOM’S TWO SIGMA PROBLEM

Research-Backed

Educational researcher, Benjamin Bloom, published a study in the 1980’s demonstrating that one-to-one instruction and mastery learning results in student outcomes two sigmas (standard deviations) tighter than group instruction. His research shows average students receiving one to one instruction with a focus of mastery learning will out perform 98% of all other students in traditional group instruction. He considered it a problem that no method of instruction is as effective as one-to-one.
